For locals, like us that have been in the neighborhood for a very long time, the best hidden secret of it is the fact that every corner of Athens and Attika is easily accessible from our location.
Here is how to do it:
- Metro – blue line, Ampelokipi station: access to airport, Pireos port and any other neighborhood of Athens directly or in conjunction with metro, red line.
- Buses – although metro is the preferred mean of transportation buses offer some advantages particularly if one is visiting and thus wants to experience Athens at a local level. There are 3 bus stations within 2 to 4 minutes walking distance from Aspa In Athens that are all called “Ippokratous”; however they serve different areas of the city. For the sake of avoiding any confusion we name them Ippokratous-1,-2, & -3 as we explain where its one is and what buses run by them. See also map below for better explanation.
- Ippokratous 1 (at Ippokratous str.) buses 25, 26, 27 and 230 go to Akademias and Syntagma but then split with the 3 first going to Monastiraki whereas bus 230 continues to Acropolis. Be prepared for traffic delays as the buses run through some of the most central areas of Athens; however you get a full view of central parts of the city just at the price of a ticket! Lastly bus 813 takes a different route through Omonia square and ends in the western neighborhood of Egaleo.
- Ippokratous 2 (at Leoforos Alexandras) there is a number of buses and trolleys running by this stop most of which go to the northern neighborhoods/towns of Kiffisia, Agia Paraskeyi, Psychiko to name a few. If times permits it worth taking bus A7 to Kiffisia, a nice vibrant town in the north part of Attika.
- Ippokratous 3 (at Leoforos Alexandras) there is a number of buses and trolleys running by this stop most of which come from the northern neighborhoods/towns of Kiffisia, Agia Paraskeyi, Psychiko. Their routes end in Kannigos square, just behind Omonia square. Trolley 14 though takes the opposite direction towards Patision blvd.
General comments about buses and trolleys in Athens
- Line information can be found here: http://telematics.oasa.gr
- Most bus stops have electronic tables that show the time of bus arrival – mostly reliable but not always (some drivers do not turn on the system in the bus so you just see a bus showing up from nowhere).
- We recommend you buy the tickets from a machine at the metro stops. There are other ticket selling points but in our opinion it is more convenient to get them at the metro. Tickets can be used in all public means of transportation. Each ticket is valid for 90 mins. That means one can get in and out as many times wishes within 90 mins with the same ticket. After 90 mins since the first use a new ticket should be used.
- Buses are blue and trolleys yellow. Unlike what is the norm in other European cities public means of transportation in Athens have uniform color even if they connect different towns such as Athens with Pireos or Athens with Kiffisia (mentioned above).
