Aspa in Athens
The Athenian Trilogy

This wonderful 3-building complex encompasses the University of Athens, the Academy, and the National Library. It stands in the middle of the buzzy Panepistimiou street, once a dirt road at the edges of the city.

The Bavarian king of Greece Otto invited two of the most famous architects of the time: Danish brothers Christian and Theophil Hansen. Both admirers of the Greek classical era and experts on neoclassical aesthetics were suitable to lead the large-scale renovation Otto had in mind for his capital.

The construction of the Athenian Trilogy began in 1864 and completed around 1890. Several artists from all over Europe, such as T. Hansen’s student E. Ziller moved to Greece to take part to this project.

Access to the Trilogy from Aspa in Athens is very easy by (i) walking 20 mins along Asklipiou or Ippokratous street, (ii) getting a bus from bus stop “Ippokratous” (referred to as Ippokratous 1 in another post). Our favorite way is by using Dafnomili and Sina streets because we walk through parts of the old neighborhood where there is less traffic.
