Tsiknopempti (= Smelly Thursday)

Smelly Thursday (=tsiknopempti) is a festival day of Greek Carnival (=Apokries in Greek). Tsikno means the smell of cooked meat and Pempti, is the in Greek the 5th day of the week. It is the day traditionally Greeks grill for long hours or eat with friends and family in restaurants that serve grilled meat. Typically large amounts of meat is consumed, as the tradition dictates that one should consume as much meat as possible that day to carry through the 40 days of lent that follow, until Easter. Smelly Thursday is always 11 days before Clean Monday.
