Vrysaki (Little fountain) — The lost neighborhood of Athens

Most of the archeological monuments available to visitors in the center of Athens, such as the Ancient Agora, and the Attalos stoa, were buried under houses, streets, shops and churches, in an area located underneath Acropolis, called Vrysaki. It is estimated that about 300 people and 80 houses were located in Vrysaki. Between 1931 and 1939 the neighborhood disappeared and people were relocated to facilitate the excavations that started in May 25, 1931 by the American School of Classic Studies of Athens to bring into light the ancient monuments.

One glimspe of  Vrysaki neighborhood can be seen in «The thugs of Athens» («Οι απαχηδες των Αθηνων»), the first Greek movie with synchronized recording of music and songs, made in Vrysaki in 1930. The movie was lost for over 80 years and unexpectively a copy was found in France in 2016. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFZJM0gb0ZA
